Watch the 2011 World Cup Final highlights – India vs SL played at Wankhede Mumbai on April 2

Scoreline: Sri Lanka 274/6 – Mahela 103 no (88), Sangakkara 48 (67), Kulasekara 32 (30), Dilshan 33 (49) | Yuvraj 10-49-2
India win in 48.2 – MS Dhoni 91 no (79), Gambhir 97 (122), Kohli 35 (49) | Malinga 9-42-2

Muttiah Muralitharan retires from international cricket

Qn 1: Why is Mahela so rarely referred to as a modern great.
Absolutely no idea.

Qn 2: Why didn’t Sachin score his 100th 100. That too at Mumbai?
HE works in mysterious ways, and chooses when and where he descends onto earth. Today, he chose to let his disciples do his work. After all, it’s the message that’s important, not the form.

But seriously, if you’re not Indian and can’t understand why Tendulkar is a national obsession, just have a listen to some of the postmatch interviews and you might get a feel of why him having a World Cup is as important as the team having one.

Great to see the return of Dhoni’s signature big-hit-to-end-a-chase. He’d put it away a few years back after getting out to it.

Additional: Recently, Sunil Gavaskar said something like – “For too long now, a lot of the old players have been talking about the 1983 win. It’s time for someone else.”

  2. What a match!!! Phenomenal performances by both teams. GG and MS really ripped it up though. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Great job India!

Magnificent match. I’m glad my home team won it, but I feel Sri Lanka put up a great fight and definitely deserve a spot as the runners up. Sangakkara and his boys did an excellent job, but the better team won in the end. Hearty congratulations to India, but awesome work by the Sri Lankan lads too.

Many, many, many thanks admin for posting these highlights, keep it up. :)

  4. Any opinion about what Sangakara was upto during the Toss????

Admin. I have just one request.. Could you please upload the post match analysis show of Harsha Bhogle, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Simon Doules (or Ian Chappell) for the final??

I really want to hear their analysis and talk.

    Thanks!

won’t be possible – i receive a channel that doesn’t have this. in any case, don’t usually record the post analysis

Wow, that’s an interesting request.. Admin, you should be counting your lucky stars .. here I’ll take a stab:

      Harsha -
(checks earphones every two mins to highlight the important piece of technology their production unit has which relays to them when to go to the on-pitch crew, yet they mess it up every other time) – Hi, welcome back — you just saw a stupendous knock, bla bla bla — I stress the wrong syllables half the time.. bla bla bla — I’m pretty much here to rudely interrupt Navjot since that’s the only way to get him to shut up .. and the foreign commentators still haven’t learnt the knack of dealing with him (vis a vis, cutting him off).. our production crew has started a fund for a restraining built for him though *fingers crossed*

Navjot Siddhu (Answers other people’s questions, presents a poet’s *hack’s* view on the situation, starts jumping when he recognizes a word in chapell’s comment, enunciates to the point that the words themselves probably want to smack him) – That was a stupendous knock, amazing cricket all round. In my PROFESSIONAL opinion, this game was as lively as the beats that course through the magnanimous film industries in these regions. The grass was green, the pitch was saffron(ish), the sky was blue (with white clouds).. with such a skewed color scheme, was there ever any doubt that India would win?

Ian Chapell (Inner monologue over Siddhu: Man, I hate this .. hate this stupid team.. they had to go and win, didn’t they — anyway, Sachin didn’t get a hundred .. and Sri Lanka probably just let them win.. just like my Aussies, the real champs, did and those Pakis too .. I was rooting for them too… never again! Hmm, how do I not give credit to any of the Indian players — wait a sec, maybe I’ll say some good stuff about Gary Kirsten.. yeah, let’s go with that. Wow, what about Yuvraj – the man of the tournament — a non-bowler as I like to refer to him.. oh he only took 2 more wickets than the leading wicket-taker from my side. Wait a sec, I figured it out — I’ll go back to my repeated comments on how none of this would have happened had Tendulkar not been given a free lifeline by the DRS on the lbw appeal against Pakistan — that’s it.. whew, I thought I’d have to admit I might have been wrong) Well, I have to get going.

Ganguly/any other sane person on the panel – HELP! Please get me out of here.. I promise to never mis-behave again.

  9. SAM HALLETT says:

Well done team India..a very deserved victory,India has played some amazing cricket in the knockout stages and then again in the final..I’m often amazed at how the Indian batsmen play spin with so much grace and easiness..The way Gambhir and then Dhoni played Murali and Randhiv was amazing.Gambhir’s innings was a pleasure to watch and Mr cool Dhoni was brilliant as always..It must be a difficult job keeping wickets captaining and then batting but Dhoni makes it look so effortless truly a champion and well deserved. a true leader of men..!.
Goodbye Sachin and thanks for all the memories..
How about that toss mix up.?.Nothing like a bit of drama to start the final..It had to be a kiwi..we do get all the weird mix ups..!!I’m so glad Billy wasn’t umpiring..he would have taken all the stumps home..!
    Party on India..!

  10. Great job done by the Indian team. They did reserve their best for the knock outs. and they did beat the best teams to lift the trophy, really well deserved win!!!!!
