Watch highlights from New Zealand vs Sri Lanka – the 1st Semi Final from the 2011 World Cup played on March 29
Scoreline: NZ 217 all out – Scott Styris 57 (77), Guptill 39 (65), Taylor 36 (55) | Malinga 9-55-3, Muralitharan 10-1-42-2, Mendis 9.5-35-3
Sri Lanka win in 47.5 for the loss of 5 – Sangakkara 54 (79), Dilshan 73 (93), Samaraweera 23 no, Tharanga 30 (31) | Southee 10-2-57-3, McKay 9.5-1-37-1, Vettori 10-36-1
Even with Taylor gone, it looked like NZ’s successful strategy of using the batting powerplay to eat into the best bowlers’ quotas (as they’d done with Gul vs Pak) would come good again. And then Murali who’d been fairly average (by his own standards) goes and gets Styris off his last delivery in Sri Lanka. McGrath had done something similar off his final retirement ball. They keep doing this. The great ones.
Hopefully for NZ this won’t be another tournament semifinal followed by topsyturvy tours. For SL, Sanga’s among the runs (has been for a while), subdued Dilshan looks more lethal than let-loose Dilshan and Mahela’s due.
And hope the rain stays away tomorrow.
Sri Lanka already get this one
On a night where the kiwis were to take flight, they crashed and burned miserably.I thought Sri lanka was brilliant in terms of application firstly through their bowlers and then backed up by their batsmen, our fielding was below par which was really disappointing.
Oh well we tried.. put up a good win against Pakistan, thrashed the minnows, caused an upset. We even sledged. We tried to bring the game into disrespute [according to ICC anyway] and now we are on our way home ..via the bahamas hopefully..!
A bit of a transition period for NZ with senior players like Styris, Vettori,Oram,Mills all retiring after this worldcup and rumors of Mucculum giving up the gloves. For such a small playing pool of players to pick from it will be very difficult to replace these players but we will scrap by proving critics wrong and hopefully making a few more semis.I’m sure the players will be happy about what they acheived .It’s been a good WC and now i can finally get some sleep..
SPECIAL THANKS TO ADMIN FOR DOING SUCH AN AMAZING JOB..YOU ROCK DUDE…!!
Hey man, dont be discouraged. Someone had to go, thats how I’m looking at the Pak Ind game now. Too bad, the Pig Club is about to shutdown.
LOL.!!.oh yeah..i forgot about the pig club.I’m sure we’ll find someone to replace Scotty. It might take a while so be patient.Hey as long as there’s love between the Akmal brothers there’s always going to be a farm animal club..LOL BADS….!
I think Indian and Pakistani fans envy you today – you at least know the result of your team’s game
Great bowling performance by Sri Lanka. Fantastic fightback by New Zealand on the field. Positives for NZ – Newcomers like Kane Williamson, McKay and Hamish Bennett are looking promising. However, it will take them some months to get adjusted to the loss of their seniors. Mccullum should continue keeping. He’s excellent.
Sri Lanka are looking strong, but their middle order looks very vulnerable. India/Pakistan have a good chance. First all-asian final. Now for the great-grandmother of all games…..
Thank You admin for doing a great job.
Not A Surprise we Knew The Lions Gonna Win
