Watch highlights from – England vs Ireland – the Group B World Cup game played on March 1, 2011
Scoreline: England 327/8 – Trott 92 (92), Ian Bell 81 (86), KP 59 (50) | Mooney 9-63-4, Stirling 10-45-1, Dockrell bowled better than his 10-68-1 suggests
Ireland win in 49.1 for the loss of 7 – Kevin O’Brien 113 (63), Alex Cusack 47 (58), Mooney 33 no (30), Stirling 32 (28) | Swann 10-47-3
Additional (slightly unsure) Trivia: If I remember right someone on air said Trott today became the 3rd fastest to a 1000 ODI runs after Viv Richards and KP.
Commentator going nuts moment: David Lloyd – “Associate team saying Up Yours” (Postmatch Video – 02:52 onwards)
The amazing thing about Ireland is that quite a few of their players are amateurs. As in, they have other paying jobs. It’s not just about this win today. Ever since the core of this team appeared without Morgan at the 2009 T20 World Cup, they’ve looked worthy of being given more games against the big boys. And if they had some kind of international ODI status, it’s worth a thought about whether Morgan would have even left. You put Eoin into this team and they’d win more. Like the last game vs Bangladesh.
Kevin O’Brien used to bowl a bit of medium pace. Seems to have given it up now.
Didn’t really capture an aspect of Alex Cusack’s knock because i was in a hurry to finish the highlights. But the best thing about it was that once he realised Kevin was in smouldering touch, he worked the singles and strike brilliantly back to Kevin.
Coming up: It’s unlikely that South Africa will lose to them since SA don’t usually lose to unfancied teams. So, if it means the Irish getting more opportunities, I wouldn’t hurt one bit if they beat India, next up.
Other: This World Cup seems to be highlighting left arm spinners. And it’s not the big names like Vettori or Shakib. Yardy, Rehman, Dockrell (Ireland), Pieter Seelaar (Netherlands) and even Yuvraj for India has bowled quite well.
unbelievable
biggest upsets in cricket history ever!
thatswhat happen when u fixed the game against india, than u deserve this
During the break between innings the guys in the studio were complaining about poor cricket because there are “too many associate nations” in the WC this year. I guess this will show them.
Yeah agree with you. This will also kick the ass of Logart who said that no associate nation will be in teh CWC 2015.
hahaha looks like something just bit old Jimmy boy on the arse… 192-5 after being slapped for a 6, bowls a mediocre yorker, then has the right to shoot his mouth off at O’Brien ( who as Irish boys do, fired up god love him )… Did you clap O’Briens hundred, Jimmy boy? Complacent England…
On your analogy of left handed bowlers Admin, Yardy is highly overrated and has the physique of someone playing in Boffa’s era…. Your top spin bowler is right armed, no?!? Mr. Afridi…
@zan – youre making about as much sense as the Indian newspapers beating up Ricky pontings crazy drug cocaine induced whiskey fueld smashing up of his change room, as too the betting scandal / game fixing of australia batting toooo slow in the first two overs against zimbabwe….
I tried to remain oblivious to him during his early career, but can’t deny that Yardy keeps doing his ODI job.
P.S. (while in a picky mood): “My” top spin bowler would be Yuvraj, Chawla or Harbhajan as I’m Indian.
What a brilliant display of batting by Kevin O’Brien. Congratulations to him & Ireland for this fabulous victory. Now all the eyes are on India v Ireland. Indian bowling attack is ridiculous too.
great victory and great St pattrick month gift for ireland
This is Why these Associate (Kinda Crappy) Nations belong in the WC because they can cause a “BIG UPSET” hats of to Ireland that was one good game of cricket better than ENGvIND This is what the game of cricket needs to spark the flame….
Holy crap! Was following the score from work — amazing comeback! Just getting ready to watch the highlights – thanks, admin. So, England have allowed 292 (vs Netherlands) and 338 (vs India) while bowling first and haven’t been able to defend 327 when batting first – very worrisome. Also, more importantly (for me)– India has been in the same boat in its first two matches (let bangladesh get 283 and england 338). The philosophy in the first two games has been to put up a big number and then assume it’ll be enough — the field settings have been way too defensive.. combine that with our top-notch fielders and boundaries are never scarce. I hope we get to bowl first in the next couple games — one, to see if we can actually bowl teams out (or restrict them to a decent total at least) and two, to see how we fare in chasing situations.
Amazing upset, great game of cricket. This is exactly what was needed to keep the associate teams alive in the realm of international cricket. It was obvious that England didn’t take Ireland seriously until the last 10 overs of the match. Going forward though, bigger teams would be more careful from get go and it’ll only be harder for the associates and other lower ranked teams like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe etc. to cause more upsets. But I’ve my fingers crossed and go underdogs go!!!
Last world cut (2007) when a big team (Pakistan) lost to Ireland the coach of the team was unfortunately killed. All the Best to the English Coach!!!
Ireland really played well. But wouldn’t prefer to see any associate team reaching Quarter Finals stage. It just for one game anyway!!
Good Chance for Bangladesh now!!!!!! They can have a crack at West Indies as well as England!!!!!
As if Indian players are not making enough money out of the IPL they have to do ‘it’ in the World Cup too!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope not!!!!!!!!!
This is embarrassment to the highest level.
I happy for Ireland and hate the commentators they are bias and one side
RE: additional (slightly unsure) Trivia
Trott became the joint fastest to reach 1000 ODI runs after doing so in his 21st match. KP and Viv Richards are the others to achieve this feat.
oh ok. nice one
ireland bat 1 video 8:43 we have a new Kamran Akmal!
